Congenital epulis of the tongue: A case report and review of the literature

چکیده
Congenital epulis of the newborn, also known as congenital granular cell tumour, or Neumann’s tumour, is a rare benign tumour. The neoplasm occurs more frequently in the alveolar ridge of the maxilla near the canine than in the mandibular alveolus and has rarely been reported on the tongue. This lesion occurs 10 times more frequently in female infants than male infants suggesting hormonal involvement during embryonic development. However, the exact etiology and pathogenesis remain unknown. Congenital epulis may be sessile or pedunculated, normally coloured or reddish, vary in size from several millimetres to a few centimetres in diameter, be single or multiple, and may interfere with respiration or feeding. Histologically, the tumour mass comprises large, round cells with abundant eosinophilic granular cytoplasm, and round or oval lightly basophilic nuclei. Diagnosis is often made postnatally during neonatal care. However, prenatal diagnosis is critical in determining the route of delivery as well as planning early multidisciplinary postnatal management as the mass may obstruct the airway during the perinatal period. The recommended treatment is prompt surgical excision, although spontaneous regression has been reported in a few cases. Case report

Multiple Congenital Epulis of the Mandibular Ridge: A Case Report
Congenital epulis is a very rare benign soft-tissue tumor of uncertain histogenesis, which is also known as “gingival granular cell tumor of the newborn”. It occurs almost exclusively as a single tumor along the alveolar ridge of the maxilla in newborn females. Although congenital epulis is strikingly similar to the more common adult granular cell tumor histologically, in contrast to the latter...
متن کاملCongenital Mucocele of The Lower Lip: Case Report and Literature Review
Introduction: Mucoceles are described as asymptomatic benign soft tissue masses of the oral cavity. They are soft, smooth, spherical, translucent and fluctuant in the clinical appearance. The most common site of the mucocele is the interior surface of the lower lip followed by the tongue, floor of mouth (ranula), and the buccal mucosa. Case Reports: This is a case of a 2-year-old girl referr...
متن کاملSeventeen Alpha-Hydroxylase Deficiency Associated with Absent Gonads and Myelolipoma: A Case Report and Review of Literature
Congenital adrenal hyperplasia comprises a group of disorders resulting from defects in enzymes required for the synthesis of cortisol. The clinical presentation depends on the specific enzyme defect. We report a rare case of congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 17 alpha-hydroxylase deficiency. A 26-year-old female patient referred with hypertension and hypokalemia. She also had primary amenor...
متن کاملHypoglossal Schowannoma: A Case Report and Review of Literature
Introduction: Schawannomas (neuromas, neurilemmomas) are benign tumors originating from showann cells or nerve fiber sheet cells. They are solitary, encapsulated tumors usually attached to, or surrounded by a nerve. Case Report: We present a case of left hypoglossal nerve schwannoma in a 19 year old man who was admitted with progressive left tongue atrophy. Conclusion: Schwannoma of the hy...
متن کاملResponse of Epulis Fissuratum to nystatin therapy:Case report & Review Articles
Abstract Background and Aim: Epulis Fissuratum (EF) is a hyperplasia of mucosal fibrosis and its main cause is the use of improper prosthesis. Treatment of these lesions is necessary because any change in the natural tissue of the oral mucosa causes the accumulation of opportunistic microflora, such as Candida albicans. Therefore, this study aimed to report an interesting observation about the...
